3 Indian players who underperformed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023
In this News we will covered 3 Indian players who underperformed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023. Team India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after defeating Australia 2-1 in the four-match Test series. The previous game at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium ended in a stalemate.
The visitors scored 480 runs in the first innings after winning the toss and deciding to bat on a quiet pitch. Australia managed to put up their highest score of the series, led by Usman Khawaja’s magnificent 180.
In response, India scored 571 runs in 178.5 overs, forming partnerships at regular intervals and taking a 91-run first-innings advantage. India made a comeback in the match and eliminated Australia’s prospects of winning the Test thanks to two thunderous hundreds from Shubman Gill (128) and Virat Kohli (186).
In the last session, the captains shook hands after the series ended 2-1 in favour of India. During the competition, India and Australia both earned spots in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which will take place in England in June of this year.
3 Indian players who underperformed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023
Fans found last month’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which began in Nagpur, to be very exciting. The Indian lower-order batsmen, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Axar Patel, who made significant contributions to their side in practically all four games, deserve a significant portion of the credit.
But, in addition to them, there were other Indian players who were unsuccessful and had little effect on their team’s victory in the series.
On that topic, let’s look at three of the Indian players that struggled in the just finished 4-Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
#1 Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer missed the first Test of the series because of his excruciating back pain. For the following three Tests, he however joined the team again and took Suryakumar Yadav’s place.
Given his counter-attacking nature and ability to negotiate spin, much was riding on the middle-order batter’s form. The flamboyant batter didn’t do much for his team other than his 26-run cameo in Indore.
Iyer would be heartbroken to miss the chance to bat in Ahmedabad, but his performance overall in the series wasn’t particularly impressive.
Iyer only managed to hit it for four innings, scoring 42 runs at an average of 10.5 runs per inning. Prior to the Border-Gavaskar series, Iyer scored 624 runs at an average of 56.7, thus he would have preferred a greater performance against Australia.
#2 Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj opened the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 with a bang, unquestionably one of the most improved bowlers in the globe over the past year or so.
Immediately after bowling his first ball of the series, he caught Usman Khawaja in front, and he remained a menace for the following several overs in Nagpur.
Siraj, though, failed to make an impact after his initial spell in the first Test and for the remainder of the series, to put it mildly, appeared toothless. He participated in the first three Test matches and only recorded one wicket, which, as was previously reported, came off his first ball.
Siraj bowled 144 balls in the series, had a dismal average of 73, and allowed more than 3 runs per game during the three games he played.
The absence of Jasprit Bumrah makes Siraj even more crucial for India. The team is hoping that the speedster from Hyderabad works his magic in the WTC final.
#3 KL Rahul
Even though he only participated in two games, KL Rahul was probably India’s weakest performer throughout the series. There were discussions about benching Rahul in favour of an effective Shubman Gill even before the much anticipated Test series began.
Nonetheless, the Indian management chose to open the first two Test matches with vice-captain Rohit Sharma.
In Nagpur, Rahul even got off to a good start in the first innings, scoring 20 runs before losing his wicket just before the start of the day’s play. Rahul was kept on by India for the Delhi Test as well, giving him two chances to succeed.
Sadly for the gifted batter, he was unable to capitalise on them and finished the two innings with scores of 17 and 1. Apart from his poor performance, Rahul once more presented as timid and introspective.
Rahul was eventually relieved of his vice-captaincy responsibilities and dropped in favour of Gill before to the third Test. The latter made his debut in Ahmedabad’s fourth Test with an outstanding century.
Rahul’s confidence would have been hindered by his 38 runs at an average of 12.67, which contained just one boundary and one six over the course of three innings.
Fans would want him to put his disappointments behind him and begin over in all three formats for India, though, given his enormous talent and experience.
