History

MS Dhoni, who was acquired for Rs 9.5 Crore in the inaugural auction, has assumed a leadership position for the club. For the Super Kings to be successful over the years, he worked closely with head coach Stephen Fleming.

Chennai lost the championship game to Rajasthan in 2008 on the very last ball, and they also lost the semifinal in 2009. Then, as they won back-to-back championships the following two seasons, the ascent began.

The following four IPL tournaments’ knockout rounds were difficult for them. Then a spot-fixing incident resulted in a two-year suspension. When Super Kings returned to the IPL in 2018, they won their third championship.

In the 2019 championship match, which was decided by the final ball, Mumbai defeated Chennai by a mere one run. Chennai failed to make it into the UAE playoffs for the first time ever the very next year.

Disappointment was replaced with joy when the Super Kings overcame Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2022 championship game.

Key Players

Ravindra Jadeja

In 2012, Ravindra Jadeja moved from Rajasthan to CSK for a fee of Rs 9.8 crore. He has been with the Yellow Brigade for ten years now. In 2018 and 2021, he played for the CSK franchise, which won the IPL twice. At Rs 16 Crore, CSK kept him on staff. In the 2022 season, he was also appointed captain, but he chose to return it to his predecessor MS Dhoni.

MS Dhoni

The franchise’s inspiration is MS Dhoni, the lone player to appear in each of its 13 seasons. Dhoni, a previous master finisher and tactical mastermind, still designs Super Kings victories. Dhoni has played in the most games for the Yellow Brigade—204—of any player to have ever donned the yellow shirt. Chennai fans refer to him as Thala. He has agreed to play for the CSK through the 2023 season for a price of Rs 12 crore.

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes was bought by Chennai Super Kings for their highest-ever buying price of Rs. 16.25 crore at the IPL 2023 auction. Stokes received more money than CSK did to keep Deepak Chahar. Whenever Dhoni retires, CSK has a candidate for captain in Stokes.

Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar joined the Super Kings organisation in 2018, and since then, he has been extremely well-known. He is now Dhoni’s go-to bowler during power plays and a very useful batsman later in the order. CSK splashed out Rs 14 crore to repurchase him at the last auction, but owing to ailments, he was unable to compete.
