IPL 2023, Top 5 7th-wicket partnerships in IPL history

On Thursday, April 6, in IPL 2023, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with a massive total of 204/7 after 20 overs. This provided a favourable setting for the game at Eden Gardens against a potent RCB lineup.

In their previous IPL 2023 match against the five-time champion Mumbai Indians, the Bangalore-based team easily defeated their 171 chase. They were also anticipated to perform well against KKR.

When the hosts batted first, they were left helpless at 89/5 after 11.3 overs. At one time, it appeared as though they might have difficulty reaching even 150–160. Then Shardul Thakur’s outstanding counterattacking half-century (68 off 29 balls) turned the contest around. During his quick-fire innings, Thakur hit nine boundaries and three maximums while completely dismantling the RCB attack.

The all-rounder and Rinku Singh (46 off 33 balls), who was the seventh wicket, set the greatest seventh-wicket partnership in IPL history. The pair helped their team surpass 200 runs by scoring 103 runs in just 50 balls.

Let’s now talk about the five most successful seventh-wicket partnerships in IPL history.

When KKR faced RCB on Thursday, they were in serious difficulty at 89/5 after losing the dangerous Andre Russell for a golden duck.

However, Shardul Thakur attacked the RCB right away, constantly pushing the line. The Mumbai all-rounder reached his first IPL half-century and was ably assisted by Rinku Singh, who continued rotating the strike and picked up speed as the game went on.

The pair set the biggest seventh-wicket partnership in tournament history by scoring 103 runs off 50 balls.

#2 IPL 2015 match between Harbhajan Singh and Jagadeesha Suchith (MI) and PBKS

At 59/6 in 13.4 overs while chasing 178 in the IPL 2015, Mumbai Indians (MI) were having trouble. They appeared to be struggling to score even 100 runs by the conclusion of their innings, but seasoned off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had other ideas.

He hit an exciting half-century (64 off 24 balls). He shared a seventh-wicket partnership of 100 runs in just 37 balls with Jagadeesha Suchith (34 off 21 balls).

Yet, despite the duo’s heroics, MI ultimately lost by 18 runs.

#3 Iqbal Abdullah and AB de Villiers (RCB) against GL, 2016

In Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2016, RCB was having trouble chasing 159 at 68/6 in 9.4 overs. The Bangalore team still had Mr. 360, AB de Villiers, out in the middle, and the South African icon didn’t let them down, so all was not lost.

De Villiers hit five extra-large shots and five boundaries in his undefeated half-century of 79* runs off 47 balls. Iqbal Abdullah, a left-arm off-spinner, provided excellent support for him with 33* runs off 25 balls. Together, they scored 91 runs in 52 balls to advance RCB to the championship.

#4 Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada (DC) vs. MI, 2017

Delhi Capitals (DC) imploded and were in serious trouble at 24/6 in 6.3 overs while chasing a subpar total of 143 runs. DC appeared to go all out for about 70–80 runs.

A total of 91 runs were added in 73 balls by the South African duo of Chris Morris (52 runs off 41 balls) and Kagiso Rabada (44 runs off 39 balls). Although DC was brought close by the two fast bowlers, their team ultimately ended 14 runs short.

#5 Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav (DC) vs. MI, 2022

With the help of their unbroken 75-run partnership, Lalit Yadav (48 runs off 38 balls) and Axar Patel (38 runs off 17 balls), DC was able to defeat MI.

The pair needed just 30 balls to cause difficulty for their team, which was in danger at 104/6 in 13.2 overs. Due to his three boundaries and two maximums, Axar Patel was the major aggressor in the partnership.
