History

The Kolkata Knight Riders, who are partially owned by Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan, have consistently been in the spotlight—for good and ill reasons. The first three years of the franchise, from 2008 to 2011, were unimportant. The proprietors then decided to terminate Sourav Ganguly and bring in the unflappable Gautam Gambhir in his place.

The results appeared right away. Gambhir guided the team to its first playoff berth in 2011 and made them champions the following year by defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final match. The title success was significantly aided by recent additions Sunil Narine and Robin Uthappa.

After going without winning the IPL championship in 2013, Kolkata did it again in 2014. This time, they overcame Punjab in a thrilling championship game. The three years that followed were promising, but KKR was unable to win another championship. Gambhir lost his position as captain in 2018, and Dinesh Karthik took over. The team advanced to the playoffs and placed third in 2018. 2020’s competition was halfway over when DK appointed England’s Eoin Morgan as captain. A year later, the World Cup-winning captain guided KKR to their third IPL championship game.

At the most recent auction, KKR spent time and money on Shreyas Iyer, but the team finished sixth. In IPL 2023, the franchise will be led by an Indian batter with the aim of capturing a further championship.

Key players

Shreyas Iyer

At the IPL 2022 auction, KKR paid Rs 12.25 crore for Shreyas Iyer’s services, breaking the bank. Shreyas was chosen by KKR more for his leadership qualities than for his batting, which has improved with time. He accomplished a great job with the Delhi franchise before the franchise decided to give Rishabh Pant the reigns. As a player, he has not yet won the IPL championship, but he hopes to do so in 2023 with KKR.

Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine, a West Indies spinner, was acquired by KKR in 2012, and he hasn’t left the team since. With his expert bowling and precise hitting, he actually turned into the foundation of the franchise. With 152 wickets from 148 games, Narine leads all iPL bowlers for KKR. In addition to four half-centuries, he has a strike rate of more than 162. In 2012 and 2014, KKR won two championships thanks in large part to Narine.

Andre Russell

Andre Russell, known by the moniker Dre-Suss, joined KKR in 2014. Since that time, he has become KKR’s go-to man when it comes to scoring runs—and doing so quickly. Russell is a skilled businessman who knows how to set up large totals or run chases. From 98 games, he has a strike rate of 177.88. He is also a capable bowler who has 89 wickets and is employed by KKR as a death bowler. He has only ever won one IPL championship with the team, back in 2014.
