History

The Punjab Kings have often had a strong early-season appearance but have consistently fallen short of expectations. As they reached the semi-final in 2008, they had a great start to their IPL journey. The franchise missed the playoffs each of the following five seasons. Their finest performance came in 2014, when they advanced to the final but lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.

It has been the same old tale for the Kings from 2015 and 2022, just as the supporters thought that Punjab had finally arrived. Over the years, the franchise has had a number of captains, but what they genuinely need is a core. In the previous five years, they have regularly changed captains, with names like Ravi Ashwin, KL Rahul, and Mayank Agarwal.

Shikhar Dhawan, their most seasoned player in the dugout this season, has been given the duty by the franchise.

Key players

Arshdeep Singh

In the past year or two, Arshdeep Singh’s stock has skyrocketed. He is a promising left-arm pacer from Punjab. Singh has come a long way as a bowler, going from a talented bowler to opening the bowling for India in T20Is. He began his career with the Punjab club in 2018, and during the past two years, he has performed remarkably well for his team. When he collected 18 wickets from 12 games in the 2021 season, he never looked back.

Sam Curran

The English all-rounder cost Rs 18.5 crore during the auctions, making him the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In 2019, when he was signed for Rs. 7.2 crore, Curran was a previous member of the Punjab franchisee. Curran joined Chennai Super Kings for the 2020 and 2021 seasons after the Punjab Kings released him. The all-rounder scored 337 runs with a strike rate of 149.78 in 32 games across three seasons.

Liam Livingstone

hard hitting Liam Livingstone, an English batter, was a revelation for Punjab Kings in the 2022 campaign. His final total of 437 runs from 14 games came at an astounding strike rate of 182.08. In IPL 2023, the franchise will anticipate similar performance as he has been retained.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan’s final IPL season as a participant in a competitive game might be in 2023. In keeping with his opening responsibilities, he has also been handed the extra responsibility of captaincy. Dhawan joined Punjab last season and amassed 460 runs from 14 games, including an unbroken 88 as his highest score, and three half-centuries.
