The hosts started the day on 289/3, 191 runs behind the Australians. They scored 571 runs overall and had a 91-run advantage after the first inning. Australia started their second inning with Matthew Kuhnemann and Travis Head after Usman Khawaja hurt himself while fielding. At 3/0 after six overs, they reached stumps without incident.

The Indian innings was led by Kohli, who also contributed to significant partnerships of 84 and 162 with KS Bharat (44) and Axar Patel (79), respectively. Kohli was the player of the day.

He took 364 balls to complete his patient knock, which included 15 fours. The 34-year-old resumed his innings on 59 and was completely in charge as the Narendra Modi Stadium pitch would not act up.

Ravindra Jadeja gave Todd Murphy his wicket, causing India to lose him for 28. The unfit Shreyas Iyer was replaced at No. 6 by KS Bharat, who turned out to be Kohli’s most dependable ally.

Together, they scored 84 runs for the fifth wicket, giving India a commanding lead. Although Kohli was content to rotate the strike, Bharat slog-swept Nathan Lyon for a maximum. The drama was minimal as India slowed to 362/4 by lunch.

Early in the second session, Bharat hit Cameron Green for back-to-back sixes as a sign of his increased aggression. Both the first and second were towed over deep square legs. When the keeper-batter was caught by Lyon at short fine leg, the resolute alliance came to an end.

Shortly after Bharat was dismissed, Kohli hit Lyon for a single to record his first Test century since November 2019.

Altogether, it was the veteran batter’s 28th Test century. His joyous celebrations were restrained as he hugged Axar, kissed his chain, and politely accepted the cheers.

India passes 550 after the Kohli-Axar stand

With Bharat’s departure, Kohli and Axar kept the Australian bowlers off balance. After reaching three figures, the former began to open up and helped himself to a few boundaries off the spinners.

Axar joined in by sending Murphy flying for a six in the distant area. The left-hander maintained his excellent form and reached his third series half-century by the time Kohli had reached 150.

Axar regrettably lost out on a well-deserved hundred yet again. He was knocked over by Mitchell Starc after clubbing Matthew Kuhnemann for three sixes, two of which came in one over.

In search of a huge hit, Ravichandran Ashwin (seven) died to Lyon, while Umesh Yadav (zero) was run out by a direct hit.

Shreyas was injured and Kohli holed out to deep midwicket in an attempt to get a big one against Murphy. Kohli was the last man out.

With with his colleagues, the Australian players and the Ahmedabad crowd rightfully praised the amazing knock.
