On Friday, February 24, at Newlands in Cape Town, South Africa took on England in the second semifinal of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. After winning the match by six runs, South Africa advanced to the championship match.

Choosing to bat first, South Africa got off to a strong start thanks to a 96-run partnership between Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt. Wolvaardt led the home team to a solid total of 164/4 in their allotted 20 overs with a score of 53 runs off 44 balls, while Brits played a fantastic knock of 68 runs off 55 deliveries.

In contrast, England’s best bowler was Sophie Ecclestone, who claimed three wickets for 22 runs in just four overs. In addition, Lauren Bell picked up a wicket after giving up 21 runs.

Danielle Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley put up a partnership of 53 runs to get England off to a strong start in their pursuit of 165. The English team, however, struggled to maintain the requisite run rate as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Nat Sciver-Brunt (40) and captain Heather Knight (31) did their best to keep their team in the match, but they were unable as England could only muster 158 runs in 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets, and the hosts ultimately prevailed by six runs.

South Africa’s top bowler was Ayabonga Khaka, who claimed four wickets for 29 runs. In her four allotted overs, Shabnim Ismail bowled brilliantly for the Proteas, collecting three wickets for 27 runs.

Brits, meantime, was named “Player of the Match” for her outstanding batting performance.

Following the victory, South Africa has qualified for the finals for the first time in the history of the competition. On Sunday, they will play powerhouse Australia in the top match (February 26).
